South of Market (SoMa)

Urban and cool, with a splash of grit, SOMA is for the true urbanite. You won’t find pretty homes with well-kept lawns here. What you will uncover here are modern lofts and condos, along with the occasional Victorian, all lit up and surrounded by the city’s ultimate nightlife destinations. Historically the center of the city’s gay leather and bear community, you will now find options for all walks of life. There are many nightclubs in the area, including Slim’s, 1015 Folsom, the EndUp, and several wine bars and beer bars such as City Beer Store and Cellarmaker Brewing Company. Here, you’ll find some of the city’s only big-box store, including a Bed Bath & Beyond, Best Buy and Costco. And, of course, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods Market. SOMA is also home to unique residential developments by some very distinguished architects, including 888 7th Street by David Baker and 1234 Howard by Stanley Saitowitz. The neighborhood has some of the best weather in the City and is relatively flat, making it attractive walkers and cyclists. There’s also easy access to freeways and Bay Bridge.
