West Portal

West Portal has maintained that traditional allure that often makes a westbound trip through the Muni streetcar tunnel feel like a leap back in time. A walk down West Portal Avenue uncovers groceries, popular restaurants, and a historic movie theater. But little details, like the tree-lined streets, vintage neon signs and heavy pedestrian traffic serve as reminders that life moves a little more slowly here, despite the constant rumbling of streetcars headed downtown. The homes in West Portal are mostly single-family properties and well-maintained and highly desirable. While the main drag is becoming more popular again, the residential streets are still very quiet, offering that suburban feel. A playground, recreation center, and the public library are all within walking distance of each other and the Muni station, making this a perfect destination for parents with active kids. Locals also relish strolls in nearby Stern Grove, a massive park home to an annual free outdoor concert series.
